Lingshui Lake used to be a lowland area. In 1963, the Nationalist Army dug the area into a freshwater lake and built three dikes to prevent the area from flooding.

Lingshui Lake not only provides fresh water for the citizens, but also nurtures the ecological system of the swamp including water grasses, reeds and the fish inside the lake, and thus the lake provides an important habitat for ducks and migratory birds.

Due to its ecological system which is different from that of land birds in Taiwan, the lake is worth visiting. There are also birds of various species perching around the lake from November to March every year, making this period the best time for bird-watching.
